The Royal Revival of Purple Wallpapers

2024 is all about color and the latest purple wallpapers are no exception. Soft warm neutrals are being paired with bold colors like deep purples, gentle lavenders, and robust aubergines. Trends like color drenching, where you use a single color throughout the room, on walls, furniture, and textiles to create a dramatic, saturated look, are taking the design world by storm.

Purple is a commanding color that has rotated in and out of design favor and is now making a huge comeback. Purple has soul, and adds a sense of regal luxury and depth to a room. Shades of purple range from plums, grapes, and eggplant to magentas, mauves, and fuchsia all the way to orchids, lavenders, and periwinkle.

We’ve rounded up 2024’s most beautiful purple wallpapers to bring you a curated selection that is timeless and sophisticated. Our wallpapers surpass trends and  blend color-rich designs from deep and dramatic amethysts to light and lovely lilacs to elevate your design aesthetic.

The bold & Beautiful Purple Aesthetic

Purple has been popular since ancient times. Purple first appeared in prehistoric art with the use of manganese and hematite powder. Our artistic Neolithic ancestors made sticks of the pigment and used them to decorate the Pech Merle cave and various other Neolithic sites throughout France between 16,000 to 25,000 BC.

The color purple is synonymous with royalty. It speaks to elegance, wealth, wisdom and power, and for good reason. The Ancient Phoenicians discovered a rich purple around 3,000 years ago called Tyrian purple. This color-rich purple was made from harvesting Bolinus brandaris sea snails.

To make the purple dye, about 250,000 sea snails were needed to create an ounce of purple dye. Because it was so labor and resource intensive, it was extremely expensive and only available to royalty and the extremely wealthy. Hence Tyrian purple was also known as royal purple or imperium purple.

The Psychology of The Color Purple

Adding a purple aesthetic to your home immediately elevates your design with a regal and refined tone. When we think of purple, we think of luxury and wealth. Dark purples symbolize mystery, royalty and masculinity, while lighter purples like lavenders and lilacs are more feminine, creative, and spiritual.

Purple is a mixture of blue and red. Blues are a relaxing color, while red is active and invigorating. Because of these underlying colors, purple both calms and stimulates us.

We can wrap ourselves in purple for deep meditation, but also use it in creative moments for inspired observations. Purple allows us to be relaxed, yet responsive, creative and insightful, and in a calm balance between introspection and action.
